Ice maker repair in Los Angeles is a niche call that most generalist appliance shops handle poorly — partly because there are so many different configurations (built-in fridge ice makers, under-counter units, standalone machines), and partly because the failure modes span plumbing, refrigeration, and electrical systems all at once. SoCal Appliance Repair Pros works on all of them, from the ice maker module inside a Sub-Zero refrigerator to a dedicated under-counter Scotsman in a Beverly Hills wet bar.
Why Ice Makers Stop Working
Ice maker failures almost always trace back to one of five systems. Knowing which one saves you from chasing the wrong repair.
Water inlet valve failure. This is the most common cause of an ice maker that produces no ice at all. The inlet valve is a solenoid-controlled valve that opens to fill the ice maker mold. Over time, the solenoid burns out or the valve body restricts with mineral deposits — Los Angeles municipal water has moderate hardness, and Beverly Hills water is particularly high in dissolved solids, which accelerates this failure. A failed inlet valve produces no ice; a partially restricted one produces small, hollow, or misshapen cubes.
Ice maker module (head assembly) failure. The module controls the full harvest cycle — mold temperature sensing, heater activation, ejector arm rotation, and water fill signal. When the module fails, the cycle stops mid-rotation, ice stays stuck in the mold, or the unit fills with water but never ejects. On older modular units, replacing the module head is often cheaper than diagnosing individual components within it.
Freezer temperature too warm. An ice maker needs the freezer compartment to hold 0–5°F consistently to complete a harvest cycle in a normal 90–120 minute window. If the freezer is running at 15°F due to a condenser issue, evaporator frost, or door seal failure, the ice maker will slow down dramatically or stop entirely — and it’ll look like an ice maker problem when it’s actually a freezer repair issue. We always verify freezer temp before chasing ice maker components.
Clogged or expired water filter. A filter that’s past its service life or partially blocked by sediment drops water pressure at the inlet valve below the threshold needed to trigger a fill. The result is no ice, slow ice production, or hollow cubes. We see this constantly on refrigerators that haven’t had a filter change in 12–18 months.
Ice level sensor or arm switch stuck. Most ice makers have an optical sensor or a mechanical bail arm that signals when the bin is full. If the sensor gets coated in mineral scale or the arm gets stuck in the “up” (off) position, the ice maker stops producing even when the bin is empty. This is often the easiest fix — sometimes it’s 2 minutes and a cleaning cloth.
Built-In vs. Under-Counter Ice Makers
Built-in refrigerator ice makers share plumbing and cooling with the main refrigerator. Failures are often shared-system issues — a freezer that’s too warm affects ice production, a whole-unit water inlet valve serves both the ice maker and a door dispenser. Parts are generally available from the appliance manufacturer.
Under-counter and standalone ice makers (Scotsman, U-Line, Marvel, Sub-Zero ice drawers) are self-contained refrigeration systems. They have their own compressor, condenser, evaporator, and water circuit. Failures are more expensive to diagnose and repair because the systems are more complex and OEM parts are pricier. That said, a quality under-counter unit that costs $2,000–$5,000 to replace is worth repairing for most issues short of compressor failure on an old unit.
Under-counter units in Beverly Hills homes also run into a ventilation issue we see regularly — they’re installed in cabinetry without adequate clearance for condenser heat dissipation. The condenser overheats, efficiency drops, and ice production slows or stops. Sometimes the fix is confirming ventilation clearances rather than replacing any parts at all.
Ice Maker Repair Cost in Los Angeles
Our $85 diagnostic/service fee is applied toward your approved repair.
All prices below are approximate labor starting points only. Parts, tax, and additional components are not included and are quoted separately after diagnosis.
Water inlet valve replacement: labor from $150 (part cost varies by unit and solenoid type). Ice maker module head replacement: labor from $200 on standard refrigerator ice makers. Optical sensor cleaning or bail arm adjustment is often addressed during the diagnostic visit. Water filter replacement, if that’s the only issue, is a relatively minor cost including the filter.
Under-counter and standalone ice maker repairs range more widely — labor starts at $200+ for most component-level work, and sealed-system repairs on commercial-style units are quoted after diagnosis. We’ll tell you upfront if a repair cost approaches what a replacement unit would run.
All repairs include our 30-day labor and 90-day parts warranty.
Ice Maker Maintenance
Replace your water filter every 6 months, or every 200 gallons — whichever comes first. In LA, where water quality varies by neighborhood and hardness is moderate-to-high, filters can restrict sooner than the 6-month mark. If your ice tastes off or production has slowed, the filter is the first thing to check.
Clean the ice maker and bin with citric acid solution once a year. Citric acid dissolves mineral scale without damaging plastic or rubber components. Mix 1 tablespoon of food-grade citric acid powder in a quart of warm water, wipe down the mold, ejector arm, bin, and any visible water channels. Avoid bleach — it damages rubber inlet valve seals over time and the residual taste lingers in ice.
Keep the condenser coils clean on under-counter units. These units live in enclosed cabinetry and the condenser coils accumulate dust faster than you’d expect. Clean it the same way you’d clean a refrigerator condenser — coil brush and vacuum, once a year minimum.

Ice Maker Repair FAQs
Why is my ice maker not making ice?
Common causes include a frozen water line, a failed water inlet valve, a broken ice maker module, or the ice maker arm being in the off position. Our technician will diagnose the specific cause during the visit.
Do you repair commercial ice machines?
Yes. We repair commercial ice machines for restaurants, cafes, and businesses throughout the LA area. We service Scotsman, Hoshizaki, Manitowoc, Sub-Zero, and other commercial ice machine brands.
Why does my ice taste bad?
Bad-tasting ice is usually caused by a clogged water filter, a dirty ice maker, or off-flavors from the freezer. Replace the water filter first. If the problem persists, call us to clean and inspect the ice maker.
How long does ice maker repair take?
Most ice maker repairs are completed in 1–2 hours. We carry common parts on our trucks for quick turnaround.
What ice maker brands do you repair?
We repair ice makers in Sub-Zero, Viking, GE, KitchenAid, Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, and all other major refrigerator brands. We also service standalone and commercial units.
What warranty do you provide on repairs?
We provide a 30-day warranty on all labor and a 90-day warranty on all parts we install.
Are parts included in the listed prices?
No. Listed prices are labor starting prices only. Parts, tax, shipping, and additional components are not included. A written parts-and-labor estimate is provided after diagnosis and before repair.
