If your oven stopped heating or is running hot and cold, you need oven repair in Los Angeles from techs who actually know these machines. At SoCal Appliance Repair Pros, we work on ovens every day — gas ranges in Silver Lake bungalows, wall ovens in Beverly Hills kitchens, professional-grade units that cost more than a used car. Call us at (323) 806-3039 and we’ll have a tech out same day or next morning.
How We Diagnose Oven Problems
We don’t guess. Every oven diagnostic starts with a methodical check of the components most likely to fail based on the symptom you describe.
Igniter test: On gas ovens, we pull the igniter and check its resistance with a multimeter. A healthy glow-bar igniter reads 40–400 ohms. Outside that range, it won’t draw enough current to open the gas valve — you get a glowing orange element but no flame.
Bake element check: On electric ovens, we visually inspect the bake and broil elements for visible breaks or burn spots, then test continuity. A broken element is usually obvious, but sometimes it fails internally with no visible damage — that’s where the meter comes in.
Control board diagnosis: Modern ovens rely on electronic control boards to manage temperature cycles, timing, and ignition sequencing. A faulty board can cause everything from a dead display to a runaway oven that won’t shut off. We test inputs and outputs at the board before condemning it — boards are expensive, and we don’t replace one that’s actually fine.
Temperature calibration check: We use a calibrated probe thermometer — not the oven’s built-in sensor readout — to verify actual cavity temperature at multiple set points. This tells us whether we’re dealing with a failed component or a calibration issue that can be corrected through the control settings.
Gas vs. Electric Oven Repairs in LA
Los Angeles runs on gas. A huge percentage of homes here have gas cooking, and that means the single most common oven repair call we get is a gas oven that won’t light or won’t maintain temperature.
Gas and electric ovens fail in fundamentally different ways. Gas ovens depend on an igniter to both light the burner and hold the gas valve open. The igniter glows, heats up, draws current, and when it pulls enough amperage, the valve opens. Electric ovens skip all that — they fail through heating elements, thermal fuses, and control boards.
If you have an electric oven, the bake element is your most likely culprit when the oven won’t heat. If you have a gas oven — which is most of Los Angeles — it’s almost certainly the igniter.
See also our Range Repair page if you’re having issues with the cooktop burners as well.
The Most Common Oven Repairs We Do
Igniter replacement is our single most frequent oven service call, and by a wide margin. Gas ovens use one of two igniter types.
Glow-bar (hot surface) igniters are ceramic elements that heat to orange-hot before opening the gas valve. They work by resistance — as the igniter heats, its resistance changes, and at a precise current draw, the valve opens. These igniters are under thermal stress every single time the oven runs. After 3–7 years of daily use, they weaken, draw less current, and the valve stops opening reliably. You’ll notice the oven takes forever to light, or lights sometimes but not others.
Spark igniters are used on some ranges and produce the clicking you hear when you turn the burner knob. They fail from moisture, cracked electrodes, or a bad spark module.
Other frequent calls:
- Oven not reaching temperature — often a weak igniter before full failure, or a faulty oven temperature sensor
- Oven running too hot — control board or sensor issue
- Broiler works but bake doesn’t — common on electric ovens with a failed lower element
- Door seal deteriorated — heat escaping around the door causes uneven baking and longer preheat times
Luxury Oven Brands: Wolf, Viking, Thermador
Beverly Hills kitchens and high-end remodels throughout the Westside are packed with professional-grade appliances, and these brands require a different level of service knowledge.
Wolf ovens use a dual convection system and proprietary control architecture. Igniter assemblies and control boards aren’t interchangeable with generic parts — you need Wolf-specific components, and the diagnostic process follows Wolf’s service documentation. We stock common Wolf igniter and sensor parts.
Viking has gone through several ownership changes and manufacturing revisions, which means parts compatibility across model years is a real issue. A 2012 Viking range uses different igniters than a 2019 model. We track these differences so we’re ordering the right part on the first call.
Thermador wall ovens and ranges feature sophisticated dual-fan convection in the oven cavity. Control board failures are more common on older Thermador units, and those boards need to be sourced carefully — aftermarket substitutes often cause more problems than they solve.

Oven Calibration and Maintenance
Here’s something most people don’t know: virtually every oven drifts out of calibration over time. After a few years of use, it’s completely normal for an oven to run 25–50°F off its set temperature — sometimes hotter, sometimes cooler. That’s enough to ruin baked goods consistently.
The easiest way to check is a standalone oven thermometer — a $10 probe you hang from the rack. Set the oven to 350°F, let it fully preheat, and check the reading. If it’s reading 375°F or 310°F, you’ve got a calibration issue. Many ovens have a hidden calibration offset adjustable through the control panel — check your manual, or call us.
If the temperature is wildly off (more than 75°F) or inconsistent between cycles, that points to a failing temperature sensor rather than a calibration drift, and that needs a repair call.
Oven Repair FAQs
Why is my oven not reaching the set temperature?
The most common causes are a faulty temperature sensor, a failed heating element (electric ovens), or a bad gas igniter or burner valve (gas ovens). Our technician will diagnose the exact cause during the visit.
Is it safe to use an oven that smells like gas?
No. If you smell gas, turn off the oven immediately, ventilate the area, and call your gas company. Do not use the oven until a professional has inspected it.
Do you repair both gas and electric ovens?
Yes. We repair gas, electric, and dual-fuel ovens from all major manufacturers.
What oven brands do you service?
We service Wolf, Viking, Thermador, Gaggenau, Bosch, GE, KitchenAid, Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, Maytag, and all other major brands.
How long does oven repair take?
Most oven repairs are completed within 1–2 hours. We carry common parts on our trucks and can often fix the problem during the first visit.
What warranty do you provide on repairs?
We provide a 30-day warranty on all labor and a 90-day warranty on all parts we install.
Are parts included in the listed prices?
No. Listed prices are labor starting prices only. Parts, tax, shipping, and additional components are not included. A written parts-and-labor estimate is provided after diagnosis and before repair.
Do luxury oven brands like Wolf or Viking cost more to repair?
Yes. Luxury and built-in oven repairs (Wolf, Viking, Thermador, Gaggenau) require OEM parts and additional labor time. Final pricing is confirmed after diagnosis.
