Microwave repair in Los Angeles is a service most people overlook until they’re staring at a dead built-in unit that costs $800 to replace. We fix microwaves — over-the-range units, built-in drawer microwaves, and countertop models — and in most cases repair is significantly cheaper than replacement. Call (323) 806-3039 to get a tech scheduled.

Why Built-In Microwave Repair Is Worth It

Countertop microwaves are disposable. A basic unit costs $80 and the economics of repair don’t make sense. Built-in microwaves are a completely different story.

A quality over-the-range microwave from Bosch, GE, or a luxury brand runs $500–$1,500 new — and that’s before installation. Built-in trim-kit models and microwave drawer units can cost $1,500–$3,000+. When you add installation labor and the possibility that a new unit won’t match your existing cabinetry or cutout dimensions exactly, replacement becomes a real headache.

Most built-in microwave repairs run $250–$600+ total (labor + parts), depending on the issue and brand. For a unit that cost $900 and fits your cabinet perfectly, that’s still an easy call. We’ll always tell you upfront what the repair will cost and give you our honest take on whether it makes sense for your specific unit.

The breakeven point: if a repair costs more than 50% of the replacement value, we’ll say so. But that threshold isn’t hit as often as people expect with built-in units.

Common Microwave Problems We Fix

Microwave not heating: The most frequent service call, and it has two likely causes. The magnetron — the tube that actually generates microwave energy — can fail after years of use. Magnetrons are expensive parts, and on lower-end units, replacement cost can approach the value of the unit. The other common cause is a failed diode in the high-voltage circuit. The diode converts AC current to DC for the magnetron. A failed diode is a much cheaper fix. We test both before recommending a path forward.

Turntable not spinning: Usually a failed turntable motor or a broken drive coupling — the plastic piece that connects the motor shaft to the glass tray. Both are inexpensive parts. Sometimes the issue is simpler: the glass tray is slightly off its support ring and binding. Check that first before calling.

Door won’t close or latch: Microwave doors have multiple interlock switches — typically 2 to 3 — that must all engage for the unit to operate. These switches take mechanical abuse every time the door closes and they fail over time. A door that won’t latch, or a microwave that won’t start even though the door appears closed, is almost always a failed door switch. This is one of the most common microwave repairs and it’s worth fixing.

Sparking inside the microwave: Sparking is almost always caused by one of three things: food splatter on the waveguide cover (the cardboard or mica panel on the interior wall — replace it, they’re cheap), a chipped or damaged interior coating, or metal accidentally left in the cavity. If it’s coating damage, the cavity itself may need professional assessment. Don’t run a microwave that’s sparking.

Display dead, control panel unresponsive: Failed control boards or blown fuses. Sometimes a tripped thermal cutout — the microwave has internal thermal protection that trips if it overheats, and it sometimes doesn’t reset on its own.

WARNING: Microwave High-Voltage Safety

This section is here because it matters, and people need to understand it.

Microwave ovens contain a high-voltage capacitor that stores a lethal electrical charge — typically around 2,100 volts DC. This capacitor retains that charge even after the microwave is unplugged. It doesn’t discharge immediately. A capacitor that hasn’t been properly discharged by a trained technician can deliver a fatal shock hours after the unit was last used.

This isn’t a warning we include for legal reasons. People die attempting DIY microwave repairs after watching a tutorial online. The procedures that look simple — changing a door switch, replacing a fuse — require working in close proximity to that capacitor. A licensed tech knows how to safely discharge it before any other work begins.

Do not open a microwave yourself. Call us at (323) 806-3039 and let a qualified tech handle it.

We also strongly recommend not running a microwave that’s sparking, smells like burning electronics, or has visible damage to the interior. Unplug it and call us.

See our Oven Repair page if you’re having issues with your conventional oven — that’s entirely different and much safer territory.

Brands We Repair

We service all major microwave brands:

Bosch built-in microwaves are common in remodeled kitchens across Los Angeles and frequently pair with Bosch wall ovens. We stock common Bosch microwave parts.

GE and GE Profile over-the-range and built-in models are among the most widely installed in LA. Parts are well-stocked and repair is usually economical.

KitchenAid, Whirlpool, Maytag — these share significant platform overlap, which means parts availability is generally good and repair costs stay reasonable.

Samsung and LG — common over-the-range units. Control board and door switch repairs are frequent on these brands.

Sharp microwave drawers — increasingly popular in high-end kitchen remodels. The drawer mechanism adds complexity but these are repairable.

Thermador, Miele, Gaggenau — luxury built-in units. OEM parts cost more and some require ordering, but given the replacement cost of these units, repair almost always makes financial sense.

If you’re not sure whether your brand or model is something we service, call us at (323) 806-3039 — if we can’t help, we’ll tell you honestly.

Microwave Repair FAQs

Is it worth repairing a microwave?

For over-the-range and built-in microwaves costing $300+, repair is often worth it. For basic countertop microwaves under $150, replacement may be more economical. We'll give you an honest assessment after diagnosis.

Why is my microwave sparking inside?

Sparking is usually caused by food debris on the waveguide cover, metal accidentally left inside, or a damaged waveguide cover or magnetron. Stop using the microwave immediately and call us — sparking can cause a fire.

Can you repair over-the-range microwaves?

Yes. We repair over-the-range, built-in, and countertop microwaves. Our technicians can work on mounted units without removing them from the wall in most cases.

What microwave brands do you repair?

We repair all brands: GE, Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Bosch, Miele, Sharp, Panasonic, and more.

Is microwave repair safe for a technician?

Yes — when performed by a trained professional. Microwaves contain high-voltage capacitors that can hold a lethal charge even when unplugged. Never attempt DIY microwave repair — always call a professional.

What warranty do you provide on repairs?

We provide a 30-day warranty on all labor and a 90-day warranty on all parts we install.

Are parts included in the listed prices?

No. Listed prices are labor starting prices only. Parts, tax, shipping, and additional components are not included. A written parts-and-labor estimate is provided after diagnosis and before repair.
